Though most of Isabel Coixet‘s portraits revolve around strong female characters, I think this is the first time that one of her heroines comes packing heat. Rinko Kikuchi who is probably Japan’s most popular female actress import at the moment, will indeed topline the feature in a language she feels comfortable in. Rian Johnson whimsically used her in The Brothers Bloom as a TNT expert and now Variety reports that she is confirmed to play in and be joined by Coixet’s fellow countryman in actor Sergi Lopez (The Pan’s Labyrinth) will play the target.
A self-confessed fan of everything Japanese, Coixet sets Map of the Sounds of Tokyo in bright lights of the capitol city, and centers this on a solitary young Japanese woman (Kikuchi) who works in a fish market at night and occasionally as a hired killer. She’s contracted to assassinate a Spanish man (Lopez), who’s blamed for the suicide of a rich businessman’s daughter. Meanwhile, a sound engineer (Min Tanaka), who’s fascinated by the woman and the sounds of Tokyo, tracks the girl through the city.
If ready in time, this could very well be submitted to the Cannes film festival.
