SPC Goes Cuckoo for Coco: Buys Second Chanel Biopic

Date:

Following in the footsteps of IFC with their pre-premiere announcements, Sony Pictures Classics have picked up their second Coco biopic in almost in as many months. Back in mid March the company picked up Coco avant Chanel and now they have picked up Coco when she was in the period of her life where she was a card carrying member of fashion world of Paris.

Jan Kounen‘s Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky is the closing film at this year’s Cannes, and we can expect Michael Barker and Tom Bernard to develop the sort of strategy where the roll out of one helps in promoting the next feature. Tautou is a more recognizable face due to her Amelie role and this would allow audiences to be introduced and phased into the lesser known Anna Mouglalis as Chanel. The devine Mouglalis would be most known via her role in Novo and later, Romanzo criminale, is know pegged to play in Serge Gainsbourg, vie héroïque as the infamous Juliette Greco.

Kounen’s film is set in 1920’s Paris where Coco Chanel has established herself in the world of fashion and Igor Stravinsky, displaced by the Russian Revolution, is living destitute in Paris with his family and suffering from a disastrous reaction to an early production of his ballet. The pair is introduced and the attraction is immediate – the two embark on a passionate affair, which results in a period of great artistic achievement for both artists.
