Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2010: Rowan Joffe’s Brighton Rock

Date:

IONCINEMA.com Top 100 Films

#51. Brighton Rock

Director/Writer: Rowan Joffe
Producers: Paul Webster (Eastern Promises)
Distributor: Rights Available.

The Gist: This is an adaptation of Graham Greene’s classic novel about a young gangster who marries a waitress to keep her quiet after she sees him commit murder. The new project will go back to the original source material rather than the film for its inspiration, but it will be set in 1964 rather than the book’s original 1939…(more)

Cast: Carey Mulligan, John Hurt, Helen Mirren, Pete Postlethwaite, Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough.

Why is it on the list?Joffe has proven himself as a strong voice: he began his career as a scribe for Pawel Pawlikowski’s Last Resort, expanded a franchise with 28 Weeks Later and helped adapt The American for Anton Corbijn (also coming out this year and on this list). If core of the featured relationship between a thug and waitress comes across unscathed, then we’ll be talking about Carey Mulligan for a good portion of 2010.

Release Date/Status?: An Autumn film festival (London, TIFF) sounds about right – domestic U.S pick-up is assured.
