Venice 2010: Alex de la Iglesia’s A Sad Trumpet Ballad Headed to the Fest?

Quentin Tarantino might be in for a treat if Alex de la Iglesia completes his A Sad Trumpet Ballad on time. I first heard of the project via our Spanish film correspondent Mario Balarezo del Caz (back in March) and a friend pointed the project out to me at Cannes. This bizarro fantasy war pic looks on the surface to be Fellini-esque with equal parts Terry Gilliam and I can assure you will be one of the better, most pursued Euro titles to either come out this year, or next. Iglesia describes his film as a “grotesque tragedy of comedic horror” which isn’t apparent in these shots – Twitchfilm was cool enough to grab the pics available on the production blog and make a flip book out of them. 1937 Spanish civil war, Javier and Sergio, two circus clowns are in love with the same woman, a dancer. They are recruited by force to join the militia and the butchery starts as they are still in their clown costume.
