Live from Cannes: IONCINEMA’s 2008 Coverage: Day 3

Date:

I had this nagging problem that only got worse twenty minutes before I landed from my plane ride. Left ear popped and I’ve been walking around for the past three days with what felt like sea water stuck in there. The best time to take care of something like this is earlier than later, and the best time to do so is on a crappy weather day filling the streets with poke your eye out umbrellas. A quick trip to the drugstore and then a quick trip upstairs to the doctor and I have a remedy in hand – it only drives home Michael Moore’s Sicko message.

The photo above – is the ocean front which now looks like a filled parking space compared to what we had (count them on one hand) a couple of days. I imagine that the private yacht parties have started – and so far my invites still stand at zero.

Today, was a three film day – catching an early morning screening in the Director’s Fortnight section. Maximum Films’ Romanian film Boogie tells a non-conventional spring break story from the POV of a family man hooking up with his buddies for an evening of fun and reflection.

Next up, was an early night serving of Woody Allen‘s latest rom com Vicky Cristina
Barcelona
. A beautiful cast of people, lots of sexy situations with sunny locales and especially fine performances from Bardem and Cruz.

I waved the night goodbye with James Toback‘s Tyson (both director and boxer were on hand to present the film and receive after screening kudos). Unfortunately, I found nothing fearless about this docu project – in fact it comes across as fairly tame.

Here are some of the films I missed:

Arnaud Desplechin is releasing Un conte de Noël in France’s theaters next week – so I didn’t exactly want to ran out and see this picture. This will be the same situation in a couple of days with Indy 4. Why bother? I might catch it at the bookend screenings towards the end.

Also screening was a special request from Sean Penn (who proves that he doesn’t wait until a festival to actually watch new cutting edge films. Alison Thompson‘s docu The Third Wave got its spot to shine.

Un Certain Regard:

Le Sel de la Mer – Anne-Marie Jacir’s first film.

Soi Cowboy from director Thomas Clay.

Director’s Fortnight presented: Denier Maquis

From the Critic’s Week we have:

Emily Atef directorial debut: The Stranger in
Me
.

Special presentation for the three filmmaker project of Rumba.
