The Gist: Otilia and Gabita share a room at a students’ hall of
residence. Both go to university in a small Rumanian town during the last days
of communism. Otilia books a room in a cheap hotel. They have a date with a
so-called Mr. Bebe that afternoon. Gabita is pregnant, abortion is illegal and
neither of the two has experienced anything of the sort before.

Fact: This won the FIPRESCI Prize and the Golden Palm in Cannes
2007.

See It: The Academy fucked up. Cannes did not. Best foreign film of the year. Hands down.
