Cannes 2009 Day 6: Shattered Lives in Franco’s Daniel & Ana

Perhaps the most disturbing film you'll find at Cannes this year (yes more disturbing than Antichrist) is the debut film from Mexican helmer Michel Franco.

Cannes 2009 Day 6 Offerings: Loach, von Trier, Guiraudie

Today I won't be touching the main comp offerings: I've programmed Looking for Eric for this coming Sunday (day where they replay all the films in comp). Today, I'll venture into the sidebars and catch two Spanish language films and one Quebecois offering from Xavier Dolan (we had a quick interview before coming down to Cannes).

Cannes 2009 Day 5: Antichrist Nailed to a Cross

I'm not exactly going against the tide here, I didn't love it but nor did I hate Lars von Trier's interpretation of the horror genre heavily influenced by Andrei Tarkovsky. Mia Hansen-Løve's Le Père de mes enfants is a perhaps too real of an example to show at the Cannes Film Festival this year, especially with the current downturn in the biz.

Cannes 2009 Day 5: Getting to First Base with Les Beaux Gosses

The film's opening first scene announces that there will be buckets of saliva used, and perhaps other specimens as well. Raging with hormones, low grade humor and charisma, Riad Sattouf's Les Beaux Gosses (Beautiful Kids) is an instant crowd pleaser and should perform well in France, but I don't think it will make its way in territories where French is not a mother tongue
