Interview: Christina Choe – Nancy

We often relate the notion of identity with DNA, our given name as spelled out on an envelope, the social media account profile we create, what is staring right back at us in the mirror, and imbued within this film text, it is informed by the strangers who surround us. Led by Andrea Riseborough (who arrived in Park City with four feature film roles only to be outpaced by NANCY co-star Ann Dowd’s five films), NANCY is about manufacturing a certain consent between strangers and sees first-time feature helmer Christina Choe curiously hint at the reasoning for isolation with a character study that keeps its cards close to one’s chest. I got to sit down with the filmmaker to further explore the construction and the creation of this character and Nancy’s motivations. NANCY landed a distribution deal with Samuel Goldwyn Films, and Choe is already setting up shop for her second feature film, as she was invited to the Sundance Institute’s FilmTwo lab.
