2012 Cannes Film Festival Predictions: Matteo Garrone’s Big House

Date:

Gist: Another reflection of Italy’s cultural instability (I think this one might take a jab at Berlusconi tv politics), this focuses on the myth of reality shows in our society, this is about a Neapolitan based family who await the news about a their father being selected for a Big Brother type show. With less than 1 month before a release, all I’ve managed to find for Big House is this amateur vid where I imagine we can see some of the cast (Claudia Gerini, Ciro Petrone, Nunzia Schiano, Angelica Borghese, Aniello Arena and Loredana Simioli) and a backdrop a la 8 1/2.

Prediction: At one time best known for Euro hits The Embalmer and First Love, Gomorrah landed the filmmaker the Grand Prix (essentially the 2nd place award) back in the 2008 edition, and according to my sources, of all the possible Italian filmmakers being mentioned for Cannes this year (Bernardo Bertolucci, Marco Tullio Giordana), it is Garrone who might have nabbed a spot. With a timely beginning of the month of May domestic release date in Italy, this social commentary should be part of the fest’s Main Comp.
