2014 Sundance Film Festival Predictions: Darius Clark Monroe’s Evolution of a Criminal

It’s been a long journey for this docu debut to come to fruition, and we can only imagine it’s been an even longer journey for the film’s subject and filmmaker. Darius Clark Monroe’s extremely personal docu was first on our radar when Cinereach awarded it some coin in 2008, and if we fast-forward to 2013 it loaded up in support from the folks from the IFP Documentary Labs, the San Francisco Film Society’s Documentary Film Fund, Rooftop Films and now is offering a short glimpse at the Cannes of docu film festivals aka IFDA.

Gist: Deep in the heart of Texas, what begins as an innocent tale of family, sacrifice, and financial hardship quickly escalates into a true-crime thriller. Fusing together compelling interviews, striking re-enactments, and home video, we are forced to ask ourselves how a 16 year-old honor roll student evolved into a bank robber.

Production Co./Producers: DeerJen Films’ Jen Gatien (Kiss of the Damned) and Monroe.

Prediction: U.S. Documentary Competition

U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
