Hollywood is in the midst of a biopic boom, with living music icons taking center stage and now we might get some CBGB flavoring as the platinum-haired frontwoman of Blondie has let it slip that Aftersun‘s Charlotte Wells will be in the directors’ chair for a biopic on her life and Debbie Harry’s casting suggestion it not that off-base mentioning that she’d like to see powerhouse Florence Pugh in her shoes. If this materializes it’d be a triple Brit threat. Perhaps Paul Mescal would sign up for a bit part?
There are two Blondie projects currently in development – the other is a docu. She rewrote the rules for women in rock and some of the touch points in this biopic could be on how she helped fuse punk and disco, how she was the queen of New York punk scene – mixing art, fashion and rebellion. It’s a lofty proposition for Wells (who was a jury member at Venice Film Festival this year), but if she dives headfirst into bold, boundary-blurring storytelling the way Harry dove into her art, maybe we can get something as groundbreaking, maybe something more arty as Blondie itself.
