I’ve lost interest for the Golden Globes several years ago, but I half-heartedly watch the telecast just to get me in the spirit of the bigger award show that takes place right after. Today’s announcement comes with little surprise, but I’m glad to see that Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon are leveling the playing field sort of speak. While Doubt picked up 4 nominations it couldn’t crack the top 5 noms for Best Dramatic Feature and Milk was almost totally taken off the score card – only Sean Penn got a nod. The real winners with the announced noms are comedies like Tropic Thunder and In Bruges which will benefit on the DVD front with the added acclaim. I’m always curious to see how the voters sort out the Best Foreign Language film category, not only does it differ from what the Academy Awards end up nominating, but it ends up giving some attention to titles that the Oscars snub. This year I’ve Loved You So Long beats out The Class to rep France and the critically cheered and jeered The Baader Meinhof Complex made the cut. Gomorrah and Waltz with Bashir will most likely going to be the two titles that carry over from the Globes to the Oscars.
