FNC: Capsule Reviews #3

Main Hoon Na
In the program notes, they compare this film to a mix between Die Hard and Grease. In other words, singing and dancing army officers and terrorists! It was one of India’s highest grossing films for a reason; its intelligent mix of songs, humor and intense action scenes featuring big explosions are purely exquisite to watch (and hear). Add to that many hilarious references to the matrix and you couldn’t ask for more! Main Hoon Na isn’t as good as other Indian films like Lagaan and Devdas but it doesn’t even try to be. This film is a pure comedy so sit back, turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. No thinking required!

Caché (Hidden)
Whether you like Haneke or not, his films never leave anyone indifferent. Expectations for his latest film were very high, too high perhaps. The highly Haneke-esque film that was highly anticipated never came. The film is stimulating to watch but it’s not a full blown Haneke-esque film as we could have expected. As a rather striking departure from his previous recent works, Caché is one of Haneke’s most accessible film. With the same plot he could have done something way more acidic like the very intense Funny Games. Throughout the film we expect something big to happen as the tension rises and rises but it never does—apart from a little blood hear and there. Still, masterfully shot, this film remains a must see this year.

All About My Dog
If the excellent and exuberant Survive Style 5+ was a movie about dogs, it would probably look like All About My Dog. The first segment, an extravagant musical number is the best one. It was rather a weird decision to put it at the beginning of the film since none of the other segments are equally as good during the rest of the film. This is one of the problems of the film; it’s very unequal from a segment to another. While some segments are very successful, the film could have done without some other segments/scenes. The film is cute, it has many funny elements and the opening musical number is truly memorable, but unfortunately the overall story could have been polished better.
