IFC Take Plunge into ‘Fish Tank’

How Andrea Arnold’s Fish Tank was left on the table for this long is incomprehensible. Sure its a bit rough around the edges, but this contains perhaps the most memorable debut performance from an actress this year (Kate Jarvis) and Arnold with her sophomore feature proves she is neither a flash in a pan, or a “fish” out of the water. Her work so far, including (her Oscar-winning short WASP) reminds me of Loach’s “kitchen sink” films (her narratives are driven with angry female protagonists) with the intimacy found in the works from the Dardenne bros. From here on out, I’m looking forward to all of her films. Which reminds me, a little off-topic here, that we can look forward to Lynne Ramsay’s next film sometime in 2010.

Having not kept tabs on who owned the domestic rights to the film because for some reason, I thought it had been sold during the festival, Screen Daily reports that IFC Films has acquired US rights to the Cannes special jury prize winning film. IFC Films will release through its IFC In Theaters theatrical and VOD day-and-date platform – I’m guessing that this will play out sometime in 2010, with a stop over at TIFF next month – where we are hoping to get to chat with the director.
