TIFF 08: Genova

Date:

I’m a big Winterbottom fan. I love this guys’ work-ethic. Dipping into non-fiction and fiction, he is basically on a one film per year stretch for the last decade. I like is shooting style and like the fact that he takes on just about any genre. I came into this screening thinking that the occult elements would play more of a part in the narrative, but in reality, Genova is about a family who become physically and perhaps emotionally isolated.

Screen Daily publishes a list of ratings from a grouping of critics during al major film festivals, and they have pretty much trashed this picture, thought it’s a major improvement on a picture I didn’t care much for in A Mighty Heart, this economically told, low budget feature does have its share of problems. Review coming shortly.
