#52. Sugar

Director/Writer:
Ryan Fleck & Anna Boden
Producers: Paul S. Mezey (Maria Full of Grace), Jamie Patricof (Half Nelson), Jeremy Kipp Walker (The Passage)
Distributor: Currently Seeking Distribution

The Gist: Written by Anna Boden and Fleck, this will look at the
promise and broken dreams of a Dominican baseball prospect plucked from his
native country to play in the U.S. minor-league system. Story is a fictional
tale based on Miguel “Sugar” Santos, a teenager who ends up far from home
playing for a team in the Midwest after showing baseball aptitude in his native
country.

Fact: This low budget film uses tons of non-professional actors.

See It: Coming off the success of Half Nelson, Boden and Fleck examine the race issue thru America’s fav. passtime: sure to raise an eyebrow or two.

Release Date/Status?: Sundance selection has been secured for television rights by HBO Films but is still looking to be picked up for theatrical. A release just prior to the baseball season seems logical.
