I bet you this is the only "thesis" film in the Top 100 list. Among Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film people of 2010, the first of several first-time filmmakers on our list, Julius Onah' debut is backed by executive producer Spike Lee and comes carrying an eclectic combination of young players in Columbus Short, Wilmer Valderrama and Alicja Bachleda.
Her brother and the feature film's producer, Daniel Mulloy paved the way to a Sundance route when he presented his award-winning short film Antonio's Breakfast at the festival back in 06'. My thinking is Lucy Mulloy will be unveiling her debut film Una Noche in the World Dramatic Competition portion of the fest. Well-versed in using Cuba as the backdrop for this turbulent storyline, Mulloy spent a year in Cuba before she was awarded the Dean's Fellowship to study her MFA at New York University, packed her bags to return to Havana for three years to develop the script, for which she was awarded the Spike Lee Production Grant and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Grant.
If Rashaad Ernesto Green's (see pic above) debut lands in Park City, it'll be representing the tough streets located in the Bronx. Selected for the 2010 Tribeca All Access Program, Gun Hill Road was a recipient of the 2009 Spike Lee Fellowship, and this fall, was selected for the 2010 IFP Project Forum. Among Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces list, this would be Green's second trip to the festival, following the Sundance selected short, 2009's Choices.
This Sundance edition should be a vintage one for 2010 members of Filmmaker Magazine 25 New Faces and this could possibly include, Julius Onah's The Girl Is in Trouble. A Graduate Film Program at NYU and supported by Spike Lee, he if quickly assembles his feature film debut, which also counts as his thesis film (Onah comes across as a workaholic) then Park City becomes a strong possibility.
Alicja Bachleda (Ondine) and Columbus Short are set to star in, and Wilmer Valderrama and Jesse Spencer are attached to Julius Onah's feature debut, The Girl Is In Trouble. Recently profiled in Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces of Independent Film, Onah, a NYU grad working on his thesis film supported by Tribeca Film Institute's All Access program is backed by Spike Lee who is exec producing and producing is Toy Closet Films' Robert Profusek and Ryan Silbert and Jen Gatien of DeerJen Films.
