While I've yet to see the doc myself (I reference Claire Denis' White Material when I think of what the film might hold narratively), when the Cinema Eye Honor Noms were released I was surprised to see that, despite the positive buzz, Lucy Bailey and Andrew Thompson's Mugabe and the White African only manage to grab one nomination. Clearly the film is a favorite for the 2009 edition of the IDA Awards - it picked up three nominations in the Feature Documentary, ABCNews VideoSource Award an the Pare Lorentz Award categories.

The Cinema Eye Honors, my favorite awards ceremony after the Indie Spirits, has released the nominations in eleven categories with Louie Psihoyos’ The Cove racking up a total of seven nominations .

With the final Gala and Special Presentation announcements for TIFF out of the way, and unless Telluride, BFI London and Rome reveal some major world premiere coups, we can expect to see new works from Alejandro González Iñárritu, Taylor Hackford, Géla Babluani, Radu Mihaileanu, Mark Ruffalo, Olivier Dahan, Julie Taymor, Sylvain Chomet only in 2010.

Tuesday August 11th sees some Euro titles worth renting out (Katyn, London to Brighton and Apres Lui), a Palme D'or winner worth buying (The Class) and an American indie film starring Zach Galifianakis as a life-threatening menace that was critically panned but in my books: is an oddity worth seeing.

Radu Mihaileanu's The Concert was a packaged and sold Wild Bunch item that the Weinsteins pre-emptively picked up at last year's Cannes, and now currently in post-production, the film is probably setting its sights on a double preem at Venice and TIFF in the fall.
