Breaking out around the time where NYFF is on its last legs, Montreal's Festival du nouveau cinéma (October 12 to 23) kicks in with about four times the size in volume, and obviously more of an eclectic range. This year is the festival's big 40 - and for the occasion they've commissioned some of the names who've been a part of the festival to each contribute a short film in the context of what is being called the "Cartes Blanches" series. Denis Côté, Deco Dawson, Sophie Deraspe, Rodrigue Jean, Zacharias Kunuk, Marie Losier, Catherine Martin, Bruce McDonald, Théodore Ushev and Denis Villeneuve will each submit a four minute short.

Among the noteworthy mentions that are headed to Venice, they've got a must-see three in Tomáš Lunák's Alois Nebel, Susan Youssef's Habibi and Ruslan Pak's Hanaan. From Cannes Directors' Fortnight section they've nabbed Karl Markovics' Breathing, Rúnar Rúnarsson's Volcano, Rebecca Daly's The Other Side of Sleep and they've got the Camera D'Or winner Las Acacias which played in the Critics' Week.

Now that we're done salivating over the unveiling of the Gala and Special Presentation screenings for 2011 Toronto Int. Film Festival, we now put our attention on the official selection of the Venice Film Festival sidebar know as Venice Days. Director Giorgio Gosetti has mounted an edition that includes some gem auteurs and newbie filmmakers we've been keeping tabs on for the better half of 2010/2011.
