Just when we were getting used to the idea that the Requiem For a Dream/Black Swan director was joining the Marvel universe, now comes word that Darren Aronofsky has officially dropped The Wolverine --- he cites being away from home, but if I were in his shoes I'd be weary about radiation and earthquakes so I wouldn't shoot a film in Japan either.

But given that figure, this small percentage illustrates a strong dose of diversity and range of genre, budget, but more importantly original strong stories and voices. Before I begin....one special mention goes out to REVOLUCIÓN by Carlos Reygadas, Amat Escalante, Fernando Eimbcke, Mariana Chenillo, Patricia Riggen, Diego Luna, Gael Garcia Bernal, Gerardo Naranjo, Rodrigo Garcia, and Rodrigo Plá.

If I had to pick just twelve (my actual screening schedule is north of 40) then I'd go with the dozen titles below.

If at first two tries (The Fountain, The Fighter) you don't succeed, then try for the third time is where Darren Aronofsky is headed. I would have thought that the tenacious/stubborn Aronofsky would have dropped his working with Brad Pitt dream, but in the first major announcement at this year's Cannes film fest, the busy until 2017 Aronofsky has teamed with Focus Features to make something out of their deal with Random House book's film division.

Despite knowing next to nothing about the project via the trades, I had a pretty good feeling that we'd find Debra Granik's sophomore feature in Park City this year. Her first feature, Down to the Bone, was crowned with the fest jewels at the festival back in 2004, Vera Farmiga, the film's lead benefitted tremendously from the push, but oddly enough, it received little fanfare when it came time to its theatrical play.
