Today co-directors Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling of the Toronto International Film Festival announce the first batch of titles that are the make-up of the 36th edition. Today's the pair will read off mostly Gala screening mentions (our Blake Williams will be LIVE tweeting), which in turn give us a strong indication as to what will be shown in Venice and what Telluride, NYFF and BFI London Film Festivals might salvage/lasso as their own.
Farmiga will do double duty, making her directorial debut and star in the book to film adaptation of Carolyn Briggs' memoir This Dark World. To be titled Higher Ground, production is expected to begin in June, after Farmiga completes filming in Duncan Jones' Source Code.
My mentor was Kim Ki-young, a Korean master of the 60's and 70's. His movies are very unique and grotesque. If he were in Spain, he would be like Luis Buñuel. Martin Scorsese presented his "The Housemaid" at the Cannes Classics.
What would Cannes be without Fortissimo Films? Actually what would any of the other big festivals be without this kind of 'company'? They got a foursome of projects which I am eagerly awaiting to see from helmers Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Tsai Ming-Liang and a Latin American product from Michel Franco.
