Never a good sign when a film that technically opened the Sundance Film Festival and subsequently played at Berlin is picked up a full four months after the fact. I haven't seen Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's film but from what I heard, the film poses as a challenge to the patrons who'll end up seeing the film in theaters and might be a puzzle for the marketing department at Oscilloscope Laboratories who picked up the picture. The distributor plans a September 24th launch accompanied by a VOD release.

As we wait for tomorrow's selections in the non-competitive categories, I figured I'd further explore/familiarize myself with the sixteen titles (Blue Valentine, Douchebag, The Dry Land, Happythankyoumoreplease, Hesher, Holy Rollers, Howl, The Imperialists Are Still Alive!, Lovers of Hate, Night Catches Us, Obselidia, Skateland, Sympathy for Delicious, 3 Backyards, Welcome to the Rileys and Winter's Bone) selected for the U.S Dramatic Competition.

The good news is that a handful of films that I predicted that would be at the fest and that I wanted to see (Blue Valentine, Happythankyoumoreplease, Hesher, Howl, Sympathy for Delicious and Winter's Bone) have indeed been selected.

We'll find out the exact line-up soon enough and I'll see just how my predictions pan out for the upcoming edition of Sundance.

I'm not sure what the ratio pans out to be, but if Braden King and Spencer Susser see their feature debuts get an invitation, then they would have been filmmakers who once presented a calling card short film at the festival and return with a feature length debut.
