COMMUNITY RATING

Formed with Tom Eyen's book and lyrics and Henry Krieger's music, this is a thinly veiled story of the rise of Diana Ross and the Supremes during the formative years of Motown Records and is based on the hit Broadway musical about a trio of young black female singers who strive to cross over to the white-dominated pop charts in the early '60s and bowed in 1981. Dreamgirls follows the rise of a trio of African-American women-Effie, Deena and Lorrell -- who have formed a promising singing group called The Dreamettes. Murphy has been set to star as superstar performer James "Thunder" Early, for whom the Dreamettes sing back up, before they take over the spotlight themselves as The Dreams.
