Belgian-Guatemalan Camera d’Or winning filmmaker César Díaz is finally moving into production on his sophomore film and we’ve just learned that Bérénice Bejo will topline the feature. Cineuropa detailed a bunch of Belgium productions receiving coin and upon further digging we found that the actress who has deep roots in Latin America had grown up with her parents being politically outspoken in Argentina’s democracy recently mentioned that she’d be joining the project. It looks like Mexico 1986 will move into production this year.
1986. Maria, a Guatemalan revolutionary activist, has been exiled to Mexico City for years, where she continues her political action. As her 11-year-old son comes to live with her, she will have to make a difficult choice between her role as mother or activist.
Díaz saw his debut feature Our Mothers premiere in the Critics’ Week at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Mexico 1986 is produced by Need Productions (Belgium), in co-production with Tripode Productions (France) and Menuetto (Belgium).
