Lemon of the Week: The Death of Serious, Politically-minded Studio Movies?

Date:

Lemon of the Week IONCINEMA.com

I noticed small changes occurring her and there. Che received no love during it’s theatrical release. Participant Media taking on more mainstream ideas. Kevin Macdonald‘s State of Play having so-so box office results, and just this week, George Clooney moving Smokehouse Pictures outside the Warner Bros. lot and bringing it to Sony’s Amy Pascal who just passed on Soderbergh’s baseball film docu-elements. With studios cutting costs, the future for socially/politically-minded films such as The Insider, Breach, Syriana, Good Night, and Good Luck., Michel Clayton and to an extent, films from Demme, Oliver Stone and Coen bros. are in danger of finding being squeezed out from studio support.

I’m not sure who to give the Lemon of the Week to? Does it go to adult public who fail to support such films or for having changed their taste buds? Does it go to the studios who blame the economy for dropping such projects from future slates? What I do know is that all eyes will be peeled on how well The Informant and The Men Who Stare at Goats do this Fall.
