Today co-directors Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling of the Toronto International Film Festival announce the first batch of titles that are the make-up of the 36th edition. Today's the pair will read off mostly Gala screening mentions (our Blake Williams will be LIVE tweeting), which in turn give us a strong indication as to what will be shown in Venice and what Telluride, NYFF and BFI London Film Festivals might salvage/lasso as their own.

After holding back for about a month's time, today at 10:00 a.m. EST, Cameron Bailey and Piers Handling will announce the first wave of films to be part of the 35th festival edition and with Venice releasing their list tomorrow, TIFF will measure up by throwing out some huge red-carpet titles (25 to be exact). Tweeted by Bailey, 8 Gala World Premiere titles and 17 Special Presentation World Premiere titles are expected to be mentioned at the press conference.

You'd think a festival with 300 + film title offerings would pretty much covers all bases, but I think there'll be more broken hearts than usual as a result of the unbalanced production year that was 2009. Like a vintage year for wine, Toronto International Film Festival co-directors Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey should see in 2010, a significantly higher number of World and North American premieres (loads from Cannes and Venice) than previous years for the 35th edition.

TIFF's Cameron Bailey mentions..."Blakeson keeps all the players and parts of his tight little thriller kicking along at a ferocious pace. Not since Reservoir Dogs has a hostage standoff been handled with such intelligence." Gut feeling tells me that this feature debut and the threesome of actors might be worth a gamble.

A sub-par edition of Cannes might signify a better than average year for the heads of the Venice and the Toronto Int. Film Festival. I'm sure Venice's Marco Müller and TIFF's Piers Handling and Cameron Bailey are already making some tough decisions as we speak. Since I'm already looking forward to the Fall movie going season and festival editions, I thought I would speculate on some of the titles that should be unveiled at these stalwart festivals.
