Time travel films are more often than not a sub-genre that hardly work...but this might just be this or next year's Inception for art-house patrons. Re-teaming with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and casting a strong threesome in Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt and Paul Dano, what I like best about Johnson (and it's obvious in a filmography that only consists of a high school film noir debut and caper comedy) is the convergence of unique storytelling and an obvious passion for the 7th art, sort of like what we find among filmmakers such as Guillermo del Toro.
Whether it's the depleted Americana represented in the chesterfield brown bungalow that the title character from Hesher decides to make his temporary shelter, or the knowledge of what makes for a cubicle layout of an office space easily filmable in (500) Days of Summer, it takes an architecturally sound understanding, a strong know how for the aesthetic described on the pages of a script to make Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character's dwellings into life size representations of the world he inhibits.
After conquering Sundance with (500) Days of Summer, Joseph Gordon-Levitt returns with his "hitrecord.org" installation in the New Frontier section and with what will be a big title for buyers in Spencer Susser's Hesher. Word to Blue Tongue Films folk ... please save me a tee shirt. Large.
