2011 Sundance Bonus Predictions: Jim Field Smith’s Butter

The Weinsteins have a good rapport with the festival, and along with the hope of giving the TIFF preemed Submarine an extra showing in the Spotlight section, they might try to grab a Premieres space for Jim Field Smith's Butter. The film is officially ready (see Smith's pic) and footage was shown at the AFM - so they have the option of waiting until the fall, or gain entry into the theatrical market with a The Kids Are All Right mindset - build buzz early and position the family comedy early summer.

2011 Sundance Bonus Predictions: Jodie Foster’s The Beaver

Summit who've entertained several options for The Beaver, might push forward for a potential Sundance release. Big question is: will the fest go for this indie heavyweight? If so, tickets will sell out quicker than any other title offered at the fest. It certainly would be a rather unique situation for thesps Jennifer Lawrence and Anton Yelchin, who might show up at the fest for this film and Drake Doremus' Like Crazy.

TIFF Preemed ‘Henry’s Crime’ Robbed by Moving Pictures

We can now add one more new indie distrib label to the count this year (it feels like a dozen) as Moving Pictures Film & TV (yes the film magazine that has so far specialized in crap homevid titles) have made their first, official major title pick-up. A Toronto Int. Film Festival selected title, Malcolm Venville's Henry's Crime will receive some kind of four wall release in 2011, especially with the name cast involved.

The Cinema Guild Have Their Minds Set on ‘Aurora’

One of the best films to come out of this year's Cannes, and perhaps the lengthiest when you discount Assayas' Carlos, has been picked up by art-house/foreign cinema stalwarts The Cinema Guild. Due to the subject matter, style and length, it won't be the easiest of films to market, but Aurora seriously makes us consider Cristi Puiu as a master filmmaker - and this after only three films. The drama will open in theaters in 2011.

Film Movement Reels in ‘Bad Day to go Fishing’

Film Movement have plugged up a hole in their VOD schedule for next February, putting their hands on Uruguayan filmmaker Alvaro Brechner's Bad Day to Go Fishing - a title that preemed in the Cannes sidebar section Critic's Week back in 2009.
