Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #19. Arielle Javitch’s Look, Stranger

I'm always keeping tabs on the folk that are featured among Filmmaker Magazine's 25 New Faces. Javitch made the grade this year, and her feature debut employs one of the best European actresses working today in Marinca.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #18. Aktan Abdykalykov’s The Light Thief

It played at Cannes this year and was probably sprinkled at several other fests such as Locarno, I'm looking at Abdykalykov's film much in the same way I think about films like Tulpin and Turtles Can Fly -- films that transport Western audiences into foreign lands, unknown scapes and uncommon human interactions.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #17. Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies

Invited to the perfect trifecta of autumn film festivals with invites at Venice, Telluride and TIFF, I can't wait to sink my teeth in Villeneuve's latest film as it appears to be a departure of sorts: the filmmaker working from adapted material.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #16. José Luis Guerín’s Guest

To preem at both Venice and Toronto, this might be the first film to measure the impact and utility of film festivals on the perspective of the filmmaker which in this case was Guerín 2007's In the City of Sylvia. I imagine that sitting in an audience watching this film in the context of TIFF will be a very "meta" experience.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #15. Thom Andersen’s Get Out Of The Car

There's a part of me wishing I could have a "different" film festival experience. The cinephilia side in me would love to embrace all the offerings from the Wavelengths programs. The one item at the top of that list, would be from the artist is was often mentioned on many top 100 lists of the past decade with "Los Angeles Plays Itself". Using montage once again, this is an update of sorts on the city of angels.
