Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #23. Julien Carbon & Laurent Courtiaud’s Red Nights

Looking like an Irma Vep meets Femme Fatale, this co-directing film debut might looks like the guilty pleasure of the film festival. Hope to watch it with a sold crowd and hungry buyers looking for something that can only compliment their slate.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #22. Kim Longinotto’s Pink Saris

If I were to gather a group of top documentary filmmakers in the business and ask them to name who their documentary film heroes are, and I'd be willing to bet the name of Kim Longinotto would make the list. The eye-opening docu just got picked up last week.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #21. Peter Mullan’s Neds

I'm actually surprised that the film wasn't included at Venice, as Mullan's previous film, Magdalene Sisters (02), won the Discovery Award at the Festival, as well as the Golden Lion. To preem in San Sebastian after TIFF, I think we can expect something that is emotionally honest, raw as there are some biographical elements from Mullan's early life.

Mazeltov! SPC Gets Hitched with Barney’s Version

I guess I was dead on with my assessment of the kind of distributor who should get involved with Richard J. Lewis' Barney's Version, but I imagine not many folks knew that Robert Lantos was only going to hand the rights directly to Sony Pictures Classics. Michael Barker and Tom Bernard have now made it official: that the hot Canadian title, which has yet to premiere in Venice and will show in TIFF shortly, is now part of what I see as their 2011 slate, with it traveling the U.S fall festival circuit including the just announced Hamptons showing.

Alternative TIFF 2010 Picks: #20. Sergei Loznitsa’s My Joy

I'm happy to see TIFF and NYFF programmers include this difficult film among their lineups, cuz if you like "the road less traveled" roadtrip type of movie, then you'll want to venture into documentarian Sergei Loznitsa's first narrative feature -- one of the highlights of my Cannes experience this year that actually got panned -- perhaps because it was so non-conform and psychologically messed up.
