Bigger FIsh to Fry for Tokyo Film Fest: Jacques Perrin’s ‘Oceans’ is Opener

The 22nd Tokyo International Film Festival will open with the highly anticipated, long-gestating, documentary film from Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud. I believe principal photography commenced something like five years ago on Oceans. The doc was picked up earlier this year by Disneynature for a Spring 2010 release.

TIFF Picks 09: Neil Jordon’s Ondine

I can't say that I was itching to see this fantasy fish tale, Neil Jordan is a hit and miss director in my books, but then I learned who the cinematographer was. I look forward in seeing how Christopher Doyle and Neil Jordan partnership will work with all things Irish.

TIFF Picks 09: Jaco Van Dormael’s Mr. Nobody

Bypassing Venice for a world preem at TIFF, Dormael's last pic was in 1996 (Le Huitième jour) and the film before that was 1991's Toto le héros. I'm not sure how much time the filmmaker has been working on this project, but sci-fi/fantasy films are all the rage now and I'm looking forward to clone world that includes a pairing of young, underrated, brilliant actors in Leto and Polley.

TIFF Picks 09: J Blakeson’s The Disappearance of Alice Creed

TIFF's Cameron Bailey mentions..."Blakeson keeps all the players and parts of his tight little thriller kicking along at a ferocious pace. Not since Reservoir Dogs has a hostage standoff been handled with such intelligence." Gut feeling tells me that this feature debut and the threesome of actors might be worth a gamble.

TIFF Picks 09: Soi Cheang’s Accident

Also playing in Venice, just like Soi Cheang, I know nothing about this film, but the reviews from Italy and the synopsis have made me extremely curious about the pic.
