Day 6: Live from Cannes: France invades Sweden in ‘Les Grandes Personnes’
One of my last screenings at this year's Critic's Week sidebar, Grown Ups is a sappy story about an imperfect father/daughter relationship that geographical takes place in the roughage offered in some Swedish connecting islands. Anna Novion's Swedish-French co-production had all the players in attendance including Jean-Pierre Darroussin.
Day 6: Live from Cannes: The Brinks of Society aplenty in ‘Silence of Lorna’
One can always count on the Dardenne bros. to deliver human drama narratives that take place in cityscapes, and that by a regular count of hands, would find that many people are unaware exists. I find myself marveled by those who live in these worlds, and with The Silence of Lorna we are reminded of the fragility of liberty and the freedoms (and passports) we might take for granted.
Day 5: Live from Cannes: Disadvantages of being at ‘Home’
It was the last film to join the Critic's Week sidebar and dubbed as a "Special Screening". It was a packed house at the Espace Miramar theater, where an entire film crew was on hand (minus lead actress Isabelle Huppert) for Ursula Meier's Home.
Day 5: Live from Cannes: Tragedy multiples when ‘Blood Appears’
This is a film about people who force themselves onto others. The final results are rather chilling to say the least. Part of the Critic's Week in Cannes, this is now a second time as in many years for director Pablo Fendrik - he was showcased along with his film El asaltante (The Mugger).
Cannes Producer’s Patch: 2929
2929 come to Cannes with Two Lovers in the competition and a dozen titles available for sales. Besides the James Gray picture, the two pictures I'm most looking forward to will be Guillermo Arriaga's The Burning Plain and John Hillcoat's The Road.
