Zeitgeist Take Nap in ‘The Tree’

Zeitgeist Films have done some very late Cannes 2010 shopping at the 2011 edition of the Berlin's EFM with today's title pick-up announcement. After previously releasing Julie Bertuccelli’s brilliant Since Otar Left, the mini art-house distributor have teamed once again with her on sophomore film item, The Tree - which was the festival's closing night film and in a way, exemplified how much of an "off" year it was for Cannes.

Tarnation Part 2: Jonathan Caouette’s Cloudbusters

Sometime in 2004 Jonathan Caouette's Tarnation made me crawl in a ball and not want to visit the outside world for a good week (read my 4.5 out of 5 star review). Round two is coming soon. Part of Wild Bunch's sales slate, the experimental-documentary film titled Cloudbusters (which I imagine is related to what you might do on a road trip) might be ready in time for a return to the Croisette (Tarnation was part of the Directors' Fortnight sidebar).

Film in Pictures: Sylvie Verheyde’s Confession of a Child of the Century

Wild Bunch came to the European Film Market (Berlin) this year with another mouth-watering sales slate and among the items they've got early images we find Sylvie Verheyde's Confession of a Child of the Century, which pits rocker Pete Doherty against musician and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. Also cast in the period piece are young thesps Lily Cole and August Diehl. The picture (currently in production) should be ready fall fest circuit events such as Locarno/Venice/TIFF.

James Franco and Olivia Wilde Call off Wedding in ‘Lola Versus’

Looks like Romantic Comedies aren't dead. After backing James Franco lead perf in 127 Hours, Fox Searchlight will attempt to lure the actor with beaut Olivia Wilde under the mantle of the 2010 Black List favorite co-penned by Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones. Lola Versus originally had Anne Hathaway and then Nathalie Portman attached, but Wilde has been offered the part in a production I imagine Groundswell producers Jocelyn Hayes and Michael London are looking to set up sometime soon.

Correction: ‘Celeste and Jesse’ Still Searching for Male Lead

Perhaps we'll be seeing the comic timing of In Bruges' Colin Farrell in a 2009 Black List script that appears to be nearing a production start date. Seth Gordon who has moved into a career split between docs films with a funny bone and studio comedies (upcoming Horrible Bosses) was recently tied up to direct, and Farrell might topline the what is being called a romantic dramady in Celeste and Jesse Forever. An April start date is apparently the aim.
