It was announced that the film “Porfirio”, directed by Alejandro Landes, has been selected for the Quinzaine de Réalisateurs (Directors' Fortnight) at this year Cannes Film Festival. The co-production between Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, Spain and France, tells the true story of a Colombian man, crippled in a wheelchair after being injured in a crossfire with the police, that after more than a decade asking for a disability allowance decides to hijack a plane with the help of his teen son in order to attract attention from the country's president about his situation.
Hours after Variety broke the story that the film was indeed going to be ready for Cannes, the highly coveted The Skin I Live In has been confirmed as part of the 2011 edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Last Friday in Spain we saw the opening weekend release for “There Be Dragons”, the new film from acclaimed and twice Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind “The Mission” and “The Killing Fields”. Budgeted at $35 million, the co-production between Spain, U.S and Argentina the film proved to be a moderate success already before its release as it grossed an impressive 300 000 Euros in pre-sold tickets, although we have to take in consideration big part of these tickets were part of a charity campaign for Doctors Without Borders as well as other non benefit organizations, a clever marketing campaign no doubt benefited the film's tally.
