Long before Bergman’s Persona undertook its psychological and existential excavation of selfhood, cinema had already been preoccupied for nearly a century with the blurring and fragmentation of identity; in its latest iteration, this enduring fascination resurfaces once again when a teen, who is discovering her own sense becomes intertwined with the personality of someone who was close to her. I had discovered Lucia Aleñar Iglesias‘ Forastera at it’s world premiere in Toronto (we spoke during the fest) and this time out at the Marrakech Film Festival, I was looking forward to chatting with more members in the team with the film’s lead Zoe Stein and cinematographer Agnès Piqué Corbera. Stein talked about rediscovering a character she first met in the short of the same name, and Piqué Corbera detailed the idea of visually entering into spaces. Forastera won a FIPRESCI prize at TIFF and Best Spanish Director prize at the Valladolid Intl. Film Festival. Here is my sit down with the three.
