In-rang: The Wolf Brigade
South Korean auteur Kim Jee-woon has been circling and developing a live-action adaptation of Mamuro Oshii’s (Ghost in the Shell) anime Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade since before his 2013 English language debut The Last Stand (which was headlined by Arnold Schwarzeneggar). Jee-woon assembled a high-profile cast in July of 2017 with production to begin later in the summer on the apocalyptic sci-fi which takes place in the near future after a seven year reunification period between North and South Korea runs amuck. Expect a title change (it’s also been referred to domestically as In-rang: The Wolf Brigade).
Release Date/Prediction: Jee-woon’s films have yet to be programmed within the competitions at the major festivals where he often premieres. In Cannes (which often sticks South Korean directors in their Midnight and Out-of-comp sections) programmed A Bittersweet Life (2005) and The Good, the Bad, and the Weird (2008), while Venice did the same with 2016’s The Age of Shadows. We’re assuming Jee-woon’s latest, which is touted as being ready for a summer 2018 release domestically, may go the route of 2010’s I See the Devil and make a North American premiere out of TIFF.
