Eté 85
Director François Ozon continues to work at breakneck speed, with his 19th feature (formerly titled Eté 84 – perhaps they changed the title to avoid confusion with François Simard, Anouk Whissell and Yoann-Karl Whissell’s film) ready to premiere in 2020. Produced by Eric and Nicolas Altmayer and lensed by Hichame Alaouie (Horses of God, 2012), Ozon casts three young actors for his trio of leads (Felix Lefebvre, Benjamin Voison, Philippine Velge) to join some of his past favored cast mates, including Melvil Poupaud (of 2005’s Time to Leave and 2019’s By the Grace of God) and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi (of 2004’s 5×2). Since the late 1990s, Ozon has premiered and/or competed at one major film festival after another. In Venice, he competed three times, with 2004’s 5×2, 2010’s Potiche and 2016’s Frantz. He’s also competed three times in Cannes, with 2003’s Swimming Pool, 2013’s Young & Beautiful and 2017’s Double Lover (see Cannes video). 2005’s Time to Leave was programmed in Un Certain Regard. In Berlin, he’s competed five times, with 2000’s Water Drops on Burning Rocks (which won the Teddy), 2002’s 8 Women, 2007’s Angel, 2009’s Ricky, and 2019’s By the Grace of God (which won the Grand Jury Prize / read review). Ozon has also competed four times in San Sebastian, with 2000’s Under the Sand, 2009’s The Refuge (winning a Special Jury Prize), 2012’s In the House (winning the Golden Seashell) and in 2014 with The New Girlfriend (read review).
Gist: This 1980s set coming-of-age story concerns three sixteen-year-olds at the beginning of an angst ridden summer vacation.
Release Date/Prediction: Ozon’s latest shot from May through June of 2019, which would seem to suggest he’ll be competing for a sixth time in Berlin in 2020.
