Top 150 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2020: #149. Garçon chiffon – Nicolas Maury

Date:

Garçon chiffon

Actor Nicolas Maury makes his directorial debut with Garçon chiffon (in which he also stars and co-wrote), assembling a notable cast consisting of Nathalie Baye, Roxane Mesquida, Arnaud Valois, Jean-Marc Barr and Laure Calamy. When the project was initially announced, Isabelle Huppert was attached but it seems Baye replaced her as the film’s co-star (Baye and Huppert previously co-starred in Godard’s 1980 title Every Man for Himself). The title is produced by Charles Gillibert and lensed by Raphaël Vandenbussche. Maury has appeared in a number of noted films since the mid-2000s, perhaps most recognizable in the US thanks to his role in a segment of the 2006 omnibus Paris je t’aime. Recently, he starred opposite Vanessa Paradis in Yann Gonzalez’s Knife+Heart in 2018 (and also starred in Gonzalez’s debut You and the Night, 2013).

Gist: Co-written by Maury, Sophie Fillieres (director of If You Don’t, I Will, 2014) and Maud Ameline (Cesar nominee for 2013’s Camille Rewinds), the director stars as Jeremie, a young man reaching a breaking point on all fronts, deciding to leave behind Paris and return to Limosin, to the home of his intrusive mother.

Release Date/Prediction: Shot over five weeks from October to November 2019, we expect Maury’s debut to land somewhere in the fall festival circuit, perhaps in Locarno 2020.
