Top 200 Most Anticipated Films for 2014: #24. Xavier Dolan’s Mommy

Date:

Mommy

Director: Xavier Dolan
Writer: Xavier Dolan
Producer: Metafilms’ Nancy Grant
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Anne Dorval, Suzanne Clement, Antoine-Olivier Pilon

Hot off the fumes of premiering Tom at the Farm at the end of 2013, Xavier Dolan is already in the midst of his shooting his next film, Mommy, before he says he heads to Hollywood for a mid-budget feature, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan. Whatever your thoughts are on Dolan, at 24, he’s directed an exciting quartet of films, often exploring queer themes through difficult perspectives that are sometimes hard to enjoy but never without merit. While few details have been revealed about his next feature, it reunites him with Anne Dorval, who gave an excellent performance as Dolan’s mother in his 2009 debut I Killed My Mother, and the scene stealing Suzanne Clement from Laurence Anyways. What little is known sounds ominous, creepy, and exciting.

Gist: A widowed single mother, raising her violent son alone, finds new hope when a mysterious neighbour, a woman, inserts herself into the mother and son’s household, providing the mother with needed support.

Release Date: If it’s ready in time, we’re wondering if this might be Dolan’s crack at a coveted Main Competition slot at Cannes (his first three films premiered in side bars and Tom at the Farm went to Venice).
