2014 Cannes Critics’ Panel Day 5: Miller’s Foxcatcher is Gold Medal Greek Tragedy & Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars Charts Familiar/Familial Grounds

Date:

Cannes Monday 19th –

Despite its rather grim subject matter and ultimate denounement, the reception was warm and positive for this morning’s 8:30 a.m. Grand Lumiere world premiere to The Foxcatcher. With only his third fictional feature film, Bennett Miller’s first time in Cannes should be a memorable one, as he appears to have a knack for making compelling material at of biopic terrain. Sculpted with the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Channing Tatum and Steve Carell,  this is a fairly somber interpretation of the events that unfold on the du Pont estate. We’re antsy to see how our other critics grade the material.

In the other Main Comp English-language film item of the day, having screened yesterday night at 7:00p.m., critics have had time to mull over Cronenberg’s latest, Maps to the Stars. Filled with name-dropping, auds will wonder who the kids & adults in this bizarro universe otherwise known as Hollywood. His fifth trip to Cannes, he previously showcased Crash (1996),  Spider (2002), A History of Violence (2005), Cosmopolis (2012).
