Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest – 2023 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 3

Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest – 2023 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 3

The short films, music videos, commercials and sometimes feature films filmmaker when he finds the time, it feels like we waited an eternity since Jonathan Glazer gave us his masterwork Under the Skin back in 2013 and nearly a decade later we finally get his fourth feature and Cannes debut in another book-to-film adaptation in The Zone of Interest – a project that has been in the works since late 2019. Details we sparse for the longest time until it was named to the comp.

The commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. Sandra Hüller and Christian Friedel star in this film that is technically superb and works with a sound design like no other.

Current temp: Like a jolt of lightning to the competition, seventeen of our twenty critics have seen the unsettling, highly original (and at times experimental) time bomb of the past and present and as we speak will most likely be the top graded film offer in the competition this year.
