The Love That Remains emerged as one of the best-reviewed films at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with many critics arguing it deserved a Competition slot—much like his 2022 standout Godland—rather than its placement in the Cannes Premiere section. Now, Variety reports that Janus Films (who landed Bi Gan’s Resurrection yesterday) have acquired North American rights to the Icelandic auteur Hlynur Pálmason’s fourth feature. Pálmason, known for his visually striking and emotionally resonant work, previously directed Winter Brothers (premiered at Locarno in 2017) and A White, White Day (Cannes Critics’ Week 2019). With this strong festival pedigree, The Love That Remains is all but guaranteed a robust fall festival run—we are looking at Telluride, TIFF, and NYFF—before its theatrical rollout.
Winner of the Palm Dog award (best pooch performance), this dramedy tenderly and hilariously captures a year in the life of a family of five, as the parents navigate their separation. The film stars Saga Garðarsdóttir (“Woman at War”), Sverrir Gudnason (“Borg Vs. McEnroe”), Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir (“Godland”), Þorgils Hlynsson (“Nest”) and Grímur Hlynsson (“Nest”).
