Lise Akoka & Romane Gueret Prefer “Ma frère”, Emmanuel Marre Goes Solo on “Notre salut”

Date:

As usual, the folks at Cineuropa get the dibs on CNC’s advance receipt news and today we learn that The Worst Ones (Les Pires) tandem Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret are deep into pre-production and will begin shooting their sophomore feature titled Ma frère which is grammatically incorrect but is slang that means – “it’s my brother, my sister and me.” Originally titled Would You Rather, this is based on the Sundance preemed hybrid web-series of that name (aka Tu Préfères), the filmmaker teamed with Catherine Paillé to pen the project and they re-teamed with young actresses Shirel Nataf and Fanta Kebe – who both appeared in the series. Production will take place in Paris from August 1st until the end of September. Much like their debut film winner of the Un Certain Regard prize (8:11 mark – video below). Superstructure Films’ Jean Dathanat and Pierre Grimaux are producing. Here is the synopsis:

In a working-class neighborhood of Paris’s 19th arrondissement, Shai and Djeneba, both 19 years old, have been lifelong friends. Shai struggles with a stifling family environment, while Djeneba battles intense loneliness. One summer, they take on roles as leaders at a summer camp, far from the high-rise buildings where they grew up. Here, they are responsible for a group of children aged 6 to 10. Standing on the cusp of adulthood, Shai and Djeneba face crucial decisions that will shape their growth and redefine their friendship.

Three other projects are also getting early support:

Héléna Klotz is already back in the saddle after launching Spirit of Ecstacy (TIFF) last year. Celles qui parlaient tout le temps will be produced by Les Films du Bélier’s Justin Taurand. Zero Fucks Given‘s Emmanuel Marre is moving toward his solo directing debut in Notre salut — produced by Kidam’s Alexandre Perrier. Camille Ponsin moves into fiction with Les Furies – Dharamsala’s Isabelle Madelaine producing.
