Cannes Video Day 4: Jorge Michel Grau’s We Are What We Are (Somos lo que hay)

My thinking is that there is a nice future ahead for this edgy, auteur, little Mexican horror flick and plenty in store for the pic’s helmer in Jorge Michel Grau. A film that borrows more from the family drama than the actual freight factors (there are some gore scenes, but it is almost an after-thought).

I dropped by briefly for the press conference for We Are What We Are (Somos lo que hay) – which had actors Francisco Barreiro, Carmen Beato and Paulina Gaitan (from Sin Nombre fame) along with producer Nicolás Celis (a co-producer on Agua fria de mar). What I distinctly liked about the film is the family dynamic aspect – who is the boss when dad ain’t coming home anymore and I like the symbolic mention of how corrupt Grau’s native country is. A must see on the festival circuit.
