David Gordon Green to get his ‘Freaks’ on with Overture Films

Currently attached to remaking Suspiria, and now, THR reports that the filmmaker will tackle Steve Niles graphic novel series for Overture Films.

After giving us every reason to fear a menacing bad uncle in Undertow, a bad drunk in Snow Angels, and horrified potheads by burning down millions in inventory in Pineapple Express…one could say that David Gordon Green is slowly cozying up his fans for his first steps into horror genre moviemaking. Currently attached to remaking Suspiria, and now, THR reports that the filmmaker will tackle Steve Niles graphic novel series for Overture Films.

Scripted by Peter Sattler and Geoff Davey, this is about “the horrible secret of a rural Middle American town involves Trevor Owen’s attempts to protect his “monster” of a 6-year-old younger brother and Gristlewood Valley’s other “freaks” from their parents’ worst instincts”.

Green and Dark Horse Entertainment prez Mike Richardson are producing. Niles is executive producing.

For Overture Films, 2009’s slate is shaping up to be a complete 180 degree switch-up from the comedy and dramatic fair they started off with. So far they are headed in genre fair with the remake of Romero’s The Crazies, and have sci-fi item Pandorum and they have a documentary film that might come across as sci-fi in Michael Moore‘s Fahrenheit 9/11½. I’m most looking forward to Sundance’s Sunshine Cleaning – a dark comedy that features an Amy Adams in an unlikely role if you consider her track record in the previous 12 months.
