is at it again. Ok, so maybe not everyone knows who Zhang is, but the Chinese director is about to become a major name all over the film world. Coming off of his recent win at the Venice Film Festival (Zhang won top prize – taking home the Golden Lion for his feature, Still Life), Zhang has announced his next project, The Age of Tattoo (Ciqing Shidai).
Based on the Su Tong novel of the same name, The Age of Tattoo (Ciqing Shidai) tells the dramatic story of a group of street kids in during the final year’s of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution, 1966-76. Rumored to be funded by a Hollywood investor, the film will star Zhao Tao and begins shooting in November.
While many of Jia Khang-Ke’s previous six features were considered arthouse films, The Age of Tattoo will reportedly contain a fair share of fight scenes, mostly kung-fu. When asked by the Bejing Times his motive behind this film, Zhange replies, “I want to focus on the small alleys of daily life that show the pain people suffered … and how they were engulfed by the times.”
