NMFF: Red Carpet L’Audition

L’Audition
No one expected to see another Quebec masterpiece right after the recent released of the critically acclaimed film C.R.A.Z.Y (Toronto FilmFest). La Neuvaine (Locarno Film Festival) was released last week and yet another masterpiece will be released in theaters soon : L’Audition. Before hitting theaters in a week, L’Audition premieres at the NMFF. A pure gem! The film’s strongest point, apart from the outstanding acting, is perhaps the very neat use of contrasts. The main character who’s a runner (he pays visits to people who owe money to his boss and gives them a ‘gentle’ reminder), yet he has a conscience. A man who kills a young girl is shown as having a heart. Things aren’t always entirely black or white in life and this film does a good job at portraying this complexness of life (and death) on the screen. Definitely another must-sees of the festival …

The Cross and Bones
One of the few Canadian feature documentaries presented at the festival this year is Paul Carrière’s The Cross and Bones. People say that sometimes truth is stranger than fiction – they must have seen this film to say so! As the film follows three very different pilgrimages in the Great Canadian West, some are in the search of answers by looking at bones that are millions of years old, some are in the search of answers in the bible and some, well, just drink boozer at a annual bikers meeting. Put those 3 groups in the same small town at the very same time and you’ll get unexpected results! The film is very amusing it’s a nice way to introspect about Faith (and the overuse of) … and it’s pretty funny too.
