No Laughing Matter: Affleck and Phoenix Mockumentary Looking to Land a Suitor

Date:

It’s been a peculiar year for documentary films when you include such form-challenging samples as Sundance’s Banksy: Exit through the Giftshop, Catfish and Rezo Films breaking out The Game of Death in Berlin. One that we’ve been keeping tabs on that certainly belongs to the group and has, according to Deadline.com, held a private, button-your-mouth screening, setting the stage for buy without the apparent Cannes attention. Most likely, the agency is looking to package the world rights to the untitled mock doc which basically looks at Joaquin Phoenix’s transition from the acting world to a career as an aspiring rapper.

If Casey Affleck managed to use very little of the time allocated to the infamous Letterman stunt, the folks at WME who held the screening might be able to package the film as a risky, but attention-getting offering. Something that a company like Apparition could benefit from. I’d argue that the turnaround time is short — once the cat is out of the bag (some argue it already is) then it’ll be a fight against time in order to maximize revenue. Who do you think would be the best distributor to handle such a title?
