During a time where video stores were stocked in both VHS and Beta formats, my first introduction to Paul Newman (1925-2008) came in a pair of roles where we saw an old timer not willing to throw in the towel just yet. 1982’s The Verdict and in his only Oscar win and reprisal of the Fast Eddie character in 86’s The Color of Money are part of my fond memories but I’ll remember him like many other French Canadians will – as part of a minor league hockey team that gave our national pastime a bad name in Slapshot. But whether you know him as “Reg” or “Butch Cassidy”, there is enough high caliber perfs to make a warrant a movie marathon that most definitely be book-ended by the pool shark character which was first introduced in The Hustler.
