Scorsese & DiCaprio go to Shutter Island

Date:

It looks like Martin Scorsese & Leonardo DiCaprio are going to re-team early next year on Shutter Island– an adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel, adapted by Laeta Kalogridis. The film will be a co-production between Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures. Paramount will handle domestic distribution, with Columbia getting the international rights. The studios are fast-tracking this film for a March start.

The film is set in 1954 with DiCaprio in talks to play a U.S Marshal investigating the disappearance of a murderess who escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane and is presumed to be hiding on the remote Shutter Island.

Lehane's novels are a hot property these days. His novel Mystic River became an Oscar winning Clint Eastwood film, while an adaptation of his novel Gone Baby Gone, directed by Ben Affleck opened this weekend to solid reviews and better than expected box office.

DiCaprio and Scorsese are also on a roll these days. All of their collaborations (Gangs of New York, The AviatorThe Departed) ended up copping multiple Oscar noms, with their latest, The Departed, finally winning Scorsese a best director Oscar (which he deserved long ago).

Previously mentioned possible projects between the two included The Wolf of Wall Street, London Journal and even a sequel to The Departed.

Scorsese's latest- the long gestating Rolling Stones IMAX documentary, Shine A Light, is scheduled for release this spring.
